Last year the outdoor lighting around the war memorial, next to St. Clare’s Church, was vandalised just before Remembrance Sunday. The answer was to replace the lighting with the addition of anti-vandal covers and a request was made to Paul Howarth, whose father Syd was pivotal in fundraising for the memorial, to assist in a further fundraising initiative with an appeal in the Newton News.
Rotary Newton Aycliffe applied to Durham County Council and was successful in an application to the small grants fund receiving £995 towards the cost of the enclosures. This leaves a shortfall of £700 which Rotary are appealing for support from the people of Newton Aycliffe. The members of Rotary know how important the memorial is to the community so please support our fundraising efforts for this by accessing our JustGiving page by the link: https://bit.ly/3uvObrj
Any additional money raised will be donated to the Royal British Legion with the total amount published in the Newton News.
