County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service (CDDFRS) is warning people to be aware of tumble dryer fires after an increase in this kind of fire in the Newton Aycliffe area. Crews have attended an increased number of tumble dryer fires over recent months and there are steps people can take to help prevent this type of blaze.

• Only use tumble dryers when you are there, never go out and leave them on.

• Turn off your tumble dryer before you go to bed.

• Regularly clean lint from the filters of the dryer.

• Don’t overfill the dryer.

• Tumble dryers sold under the Hotpoint, Creda and Indesit brands are behind a series of fires.

The company that owns the brands Whirlpool, had stated owners could use the dryers provided someone was in attendance. The Trading standards ordered new guidance saying that the dryers should be unplugged and not used until they are repaired by Whirlpool.  More details are available at BBC online here: http://www.bbc. co.uk/news/business-39052979 – Customers can check their dryer by using the model checker for Hotpoint customers for Indesit customers and Creda customers – or via a free helpline on 0800 151 0905
