Many years ago a family answered an appeal in the Newton News for families to host foreign youngsters who had won places on an exchange programme. They enjoyed the experience so much they have continued to host youngsters from many countries for 20
Susan Curran and her husband Dave say their family have all enjoyed meeting the young people who are between 16 and 18 and welcoming them as part of their family and not as aa guest or a lodger.
In return they have learnt about customs and cultures of other countries which they would not have known about. “We’ve been invited to a Vietnamese wedding and have recently returned from visiting our student from last year who lives in Germany”. said Susan.
EF Foundation who organise the exchanges are looking for other host families in Newton Aycliffe who could welcome a youngster into their family.
“We certainly recommend it, and to find out more call local co-ordinator Gloria on 0191 4109993. said Susan.
Shge added: “Hosting is a wonderful experience,  and we now have friends all over the world and our students think of us as their English family returning to visit often. We are looking forward to our two German ‘daughters’ coming  over later in the year.
Gloria is always on hand to answer any questions. The students attend local schools, all of which Gloria arranges, she organises fun days for them
during the year and helps families choose a student who would fit into the family offering to host.
