As part of the “Through the Looking Glass” project, girls at Greenfield Community College and Woodham Academy in Newton Aycliffe took part last week in a “Fabulous Me” day.
The project, funded by GAMP AAP and managed by Greenfield Arts, is a feel good project, encouraging positive self-esteem in girls. The programme for the “Fabulous Me” day included speakers and activity designed to inspire and engage the girls.
Each session, at Woodham and Greenfield, started with a talk from ITV presenter Julia Barthram, followed by a range of “stalls” with demonstrations and chances for the girls to try hula hooping, nail art, printmaking, healthy eating and upcycling.
The sessions were attended by the Check 4 Life team and Youth Workers from Newton Aycliffe to support the work of the project.
After a busy day everyone involved in the activity agreed it was a great success. The girls enjoyed the opportunities to try new things and find out more and left feeling fabulous!
Chloe, a student at Greenfield said: “This is great, we feel so good and so chilled out. We should do more of this sort of thing!” Megan at Woodham said: “The hula hooping is great! A great fun way to exercise and something I’ve not tried before.”
Katy Milne, Director of Arts and Creativity at Greenfield Arts said “Julia’s talk was inspirational and really explored peer pressure and image through her media role at ITV. Our creative stall holders were fab and offered such a range of “feel good” activities. Thanks to everyone involved.”
The project will continue now with more activity for the girls in school and a celebration event.
