Eric and Joyce Brown celebrated 60 years of marriage on the 27th December with a family get-together at their home in Warburton Close. Town Mayor Wendy Hillary was among the first to congratulate the couple when she visited them with a bouquet of flowers from the Town Council.

Eric, a builder by trade, was born in Sacriston and Joyce was from Brandon. They met in the 50’s and were married at Durham Elvet Church before moving to reside as early settlers in Newton Aycliffe.

Eric helped build new houses here, also St. Clare’s Church and the Town Clock. He is a keen birdwatcher and as an ex soldier a member of the British Legion.

Like a number of wives in the 60’s Joyce worked at GEC, but most of the time she was a busy housewife bringing up two daughters. The couple have three grandchildren and a great grandchild is expected, as is a telegram from the Queen congratulating Eric and Joyce on their diamond anniversary.
