Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, were beaten by 61 runs away at early season pace setters Guisborough 1st XI in the NYSD 2nd division. Electing to bowl first, Aycliffe’s James Layfield-Carroll (sponsored by Signature Tiling) was in fine form taking a career best 5 for 25 and with Jack Slatcher (3 for 39) also bowling well, the homeside were dismissed for 152 after 46 overs. In reply, an unbeaten 45 by Michael Howe and 18 runs from Adam Randall were the only bright spots as Aycliffe were bowled out for a disappointing 91 after 31.5 overs.
The first team put in an awesome display to hammer Norton 1st XI by 72 runs away in the Readman Cup. After being asked to bat first Aycliffe smashed the home sides bowling to all parts of the ground, finishing on an impregnable 176 for 3 from 20 overs. Adam Randall (sponsored by DTS Joinery) top scored with a brutal 69 from 39 balls faced and other significant contributions came from Sam Telford (44 runs) and Michael Howe (40 runs). In reply, Norton’s early batting order was blown away by some impressive Aycliffe bowling with all rounder Michael Howe taking 4 for 27 and the homeside were restricted to 104 for 9 after their allotted 20 overs.
The 2nd team remain unbeaten in 2019 after they salvaged a battling draw from a rain affected game away at Preston 1st XI in the NYSD 4th division. The homeside chose to bat first scoring a huge 271 for 5 declared after 39 overs. Matty Greaves was the pick of the Aycliffe bowlers taking 2 for 38. In reply, in form captain Joe Haines (sponsored by Pheonix Energy) again held the innings together, scoring an unbeaten 36 and with James Brown chipping in with 12 runs, the visitors held on to reach 63 for 7 when stumps were drawn after 36 overs.
The U17’s played their first game of the season and lost by 8 wickets away at Barnard Castle in the league cup. Batting first Aycliffe were restricted to 56 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs and there were good innings from David Robinson and Harry Wright, who both scored 14 and a defiant innings by 11 year old Adam Shaw (sponsored by Karen and Derek Wood) who bravely batted out the overs to finish on 5 not out. The homeside easily reached their victory target despite a wicket apiece for Matty Greaves and Charlie Cayless.
The U15’s were beaten by ten wickets away at Stockton in the NYACC League. Aycliffe batted first and were all out for 68 after 18.2 overs with only Leo Mercy (21 runs) and Harry Wright (19 runs) reaching double figures. In reply Stockton comfortably reached their winning target in the tenth over.
Our U13’s lost away at Darlington in the NYACC league by 60 runs despite some encouraging individual performances with the bat from Adam Shaw (15 not out), Thomas Dearden who scored 14 and his younger brother Will, who batted well scoring 13.
Our U12’s were well beaten away at Hartlepool despite the Dearden brothers, Thomas and Will, shining with the bat once again as they both scored ten runs each.
The U11’s lost by 44 runs at home to Stockton. Will Dearden again impressed with the bat top scoring with 14 and there was also good innings from both AJ Wild (9 runs) and Alfie Spensley (7 runs) and James Evans took the honours with the ball taking two wickets for Aycliffe.
