Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store finished their season with a home draw against 2nd division champions Middlesbrough 2nds in a game badly affected by the weather. Middlesbrough were asked to bat first and scored a very respectable 164 all out after 46 overs, despite a 3 hour interruption because of heavy rain.

James Layfield-Carroll (3 for 31) and Michael Howe (3 for 42) both bowled well for Aycliffe in the damp conditions. In reply, Aycliffe lost 37 overs from their innings because of the rain delay so had the near impossible task of trying to score 165 in just 17 overs to win the game. However Darryn Bancroft (29 from 23 balls, including two boundaries and three sixes) and Sam Telford (19 off 14 balls with a boundary and a six) got Aycliffe off to a flying start, but when they were out the innings lost its momentum. James Layfield-Carroll (11 runs) and Chris Palmer (10 runs) were the only other players to reach double figures as the innings closed on 92 for 8 after 17 overs. The draw gave Aycliffe 347 points from their 22 games with a playing record of won 12, lost 7 and 3 draws and their highest ever position of 3rd in the second division table.

Aycliffe’s second team were completely washed out without a ball being bowled away at Northallerton 2nd XI. The second team finished their excellent season with a playing record of played 18, won 5, lost 9 and 4 draws. Points total 199 and a very creditable 5th place in the fourth division table.
