Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team team sponsored by Franks The Flooring Store lost a very tight game by just three wickets away at Marske 2nd team in the NYSD second division.
Asked to bat first Aycliffe were dismissed for a below par 120 after 36.3 overs despite decent innings from Colin Myers (34 not out), Michael Howe (24 runs) and John Cavanagh (16 runs).
Aycliffe bowled and fielded well but the homeside eventually reached their winning target after 31.2 overs with all rounder John Cavanagh (sponsored by CVO Fire) the pick of the Aycliffe bowlers taking 4 for 29.
The second team also lost, when they went down by five wickets at home to Preston 1st XI in their NYSD 3rd division match. Aycliffe were put into bat and were bowled out after 43.3 overs for just 99 runs with only Adam Gittins – sponsored by Pheonix Energy (41 runs), Tom Wickins (11 runs) and Trevor Shingler (11 runs) reaching double figures. Preston hurried to their winning target in the 22nd over despite two wickets from both Tom Wickins and Patrick Howe.
The under 18s team lost a high scoring game away at title favourites Willington by 62 runs. Chasing an unlikely 173 for victory in 20 overs, Aycliffe opener Tom Wickins hit a brilliant 60 and was given good support from fellow opener James Skerrett who scored 15. However Aycliffe found the total too much and were bowled out for a very respectable 110.
The under 15’s team travelled to near neighbours Shildon and had the home team in trouble at 17 for 4 after 7 overs, but heavy rain forced the match to be abandoned and the game declared a draw.
The club’s under 13’s team fielded several of the under 11’s and also had two lads making their debuts and unsurprisingly lost heavily at home to Stockton. However there was good performances with the ball from Lucas Pilling and Kieran Shingler, who each took two wickets during Stockton’s innings.
