On Friday 7th November the hall at Woodham Burn School was a sea of red poppies as pupils and parents came together to commemorate Armistice Day and to remember all those who had given service in the First World War and the many conflicts since that time.
Children from every class made poppies which were displayed along with poppies purchased from the British Legion Appeal. The children sang songs reminding each other of the importance of living together in peace and harmony, and listened in silence to readings of poetry, prayers and good wishes.
Two minutes of silence were observed whilst all in the hall looked at moving photographs of First World War veterans and war memorials and the service ended with the sound of the Last Post. As children filed silently out of the hall many parents expressed how moved they felt at the emotions generated by this event.
Following the Service a small number of children joined residents at Defoe Court Care Home for the dedication of their Memorial Garden and presented the residents with some of the artwork and poetry used earlier in the day.
