February has proved to be another exciting month for 1407 (Newton Aycliffe) Squadron Air Cadets. Sgts McCormack and Butterfield were recently awarded their BTec 1st Diploma in Public Services by the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Sue Snowdon.
The ceremony took place at Aycliffe Armoury T.A. Centre. The certificate sees the culmination of two years of hard work completing leadership courses, sporting activities and an academic portfolio studying the RAF. Both cadets achieved the award with the highest level of Distinction.
Cpl Simon and Cdt Appleton competed for the squadron at the rock climbing competition. Both did really well, progressing to the later stages of the completion. Cdt Appleton finished 4th in his age group.
Cpls Addison and Armstrong recently represented Durham/Northumberland Wing at the Inter-wing Cross-country Competition. The event was held at a windy and rain-sodden Witton Country Park, Blackburn. Both of Aycliffe’s cadets put in strong efforts, with Cpl Armstrong finishing 13th. They will each be awarded a Wing Blue; a badge they can wear with pride. Hopefully this will be the start of a big collection!
Six cadets have also been flying in a Grob Tutor at RAF Leeming. On the squadron, cadets have been studying towards BTecs in Aviation, taking part in initiative exercises and competing in an inter-flight competition. As the weather improves we will be starting fieldcraft training; camouflage, concealment and troop movement. It is also the start of our Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition season. There are also day walks, shooting, 1st aid courses, sport and drill competitions coming up.
We are currently actively recruiting new cadets. If you are aged 13-17 with a spirit of adventure and are interested in joining then see our website www.1407aircadets.org for details.
