Newton Aycliffe Youth U23’s 3 v Eaglescliffe U23’s 3
Final league game of the season and another vital step towards claiming the league championship. A fantastic crowd, of almost 120 spectators, came to watch the game, as the town and the club got behind the lads. Aycliffe needed to get a point from what they knew would be a tough game. The lads started brightly and took the lead when Sam Thompson fired home but the visitors equalised with their first shot. As Eaglescliffe started to get into the game Arran then pulled off a top save. At the other end, Aycliffe were awarded a penalty, but the keeper pulled off a great save. However, Aycliffe retook the lead when Callum Teasdale nodded home from a pin point cross to end the half 2-1. Then, mid-way through the half, a surging run down the left, from the visitor’s winger, was finished off with a bullet shot that our keeper had no chance with. Then we took the lead when Jack Mortimer converted from a 5 pass move that cut through the visitor’s defence. Steven Dawson got into the box and was taken down by the full back but this 2nd pen was again saved high to the right. In the final minute of the game Aycliffe didn’t deal with a ball into the box and Eaglescliffe equalised to finish the game 3-3. Although everyone was disappointed the result, this should be enough to secure the league title, as the champagne stayed on ice.
The coaches and players would like to say thank you to everyone who turned out and gave great support.
