On Sunday 19th January 2014 five members of Aycliffe Running Club braved the rain for the Brass Monkey Half Marathon at York. The race, which is hosted by York Knavesmire Harriers, had to be cancelled last year due to snow and, although no snow this year, conditions were very wet.
However, the weather did not dampen the spirits of the 1500 competitors. The race was mostly flat and on public roads.  It headed southwards through Bishopthorpe, Acaster Selby, Appleton Roebuck and back through Bishopthorpe to finish behind the racecourse grandstands. First to finish for Aycliffe was Graham Atkins 1:33:06, followed by Sandra Collins 1:47:44, Trish Kay 1:48:24, John Young 1:50:36, and Dave Mackenzie 2:04:36
On the same day at the Stockton Winter 5k Trail Series at Cowpen Bewley.   Peter Smith and Kevin Greenall represented Aycliffe Running Club.  It was reported as being a mud bath with competitors slipping and sliding but most runners seemed to enjoy the mud and some described it as being ‘a great character building experience’.
Peter Smith completed the course in 19th position and 1st M50 23:06 and Kevin Greenall 53rd in 26:39. Visit www.ayclifferunningclub.org.uk for details about the club and their training sessions.
