The 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, had to settle for a draw away at Northallerton firsts in the NYSD 2nd division. After being asked to bat first Aycliffe scored a season’s best 293 for 6 in their allotted 50 overs with Joe Teasdale top scoring with a blistering career best innings of 90 from 61 balls, including eight boundaries and six big maximums. Opener Luke Telford (sponsored by Mal and Jean Pattinson) also batted well with a season’s best score of 77 from 100 balls and captain Chris Palmer chipped in with 37 from 74 balls. In reply, off spinner Luke Telford followed up his earlier good work with the bat by taking 5 for 57 from 15 overs to become the first player in the club’s history to twice achieve the rare double of taking five wickets and scoring a half century in the same game after first achieving the feat in 2011. George Slatcher (3 for 63) also bowled well, but the homeside held on at the end to reach 230 for 9 at stumps.
Newton Aycliffe’s 2nd team fielded nine juniors and, with an average overall age of just 16, became the youngest senior team in the club’s history to play a league game. Captain Dan Weldon elected to bat first and our talented youngsters then proceeded to smash Northallerton’s experienced bowling attack to all parts of the ground to reach a second team club record innings score of 309 for 5 from their allotted 40 overs. Dan Weldon led from the front with a brutal career best score of 88 from just 53 balls and his innings included ten boundaries and five huge sixes. He took 19 balls to get his first seven runs and then his next 81 runs were scored from just 34 balls in an outrageous display of powerhouse batting as the ball disappeared to all parts of the ground. Weldon was finally dismissed in the last over, caught on the boundary in an attempt to get six of the 12 runs needed to reach his century before the innings closed. Special mention must also go to Jai Sander (81 from 64 balls) and Dan Bowmer (60 from 78 balls) who both also hit career best scores in the record breaking Aycliffe innings. In reply, 15 year old Tom Dearden (3 for 48) and his 13 year old brother Will (2 for 53) both bowled well for Aycliffe but the visitors held on for a draw as they reached 188 for 8 at stumps.
The u15’s lost at home to unbeaten league leaders Sedgefield by seven wickets in the NYACC League. Asked to bat first, Aycliffe scored a below par 83 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs with the main contributions coming from Dan Heaton (18 off 26 balls), Harrison Pearson (14 off 25 balls) and an unbeaten 14 from 26 balls by Leo Stout. In reply, the visitors eased to victory reaching 87 for 3 with three overs still remaining.
The u13’s lost by 20 runs at home to Barnard Castle, but special mention must go to opening batsman Alfie Spensley who scored an excellent career best 30 runs retired and, earlier, Theo Jackson and Georgia Leeming both took a wicket when the visitors batted.
The u11’s pulled off a stunning win by just nine runs at home to Richmond in the NYACC. Captain Joey Hayman again led from the front with another excellent all round display, top scoring with 21 and taking 2 for 12. Trent Telford (14 not out) and Phoebe Sproat (7 not out) both batted well for Aycliffe and Miles Telford (2-23), Harvey Palmer (1 for 12) and Daniel Collett (1 for 22) all performed well with the ball. The u11’s girls team began their season and had a mixed afternoon when they played in a mini festival at Sedgefield CC. They lost their first game against the hosts and then beat Hartlepool in an exciting game by 5 runs. All the young girls played well, but Phoebe Sproat deserves a mention as she took two wickets for just one run and then stopped two boundaries in the last over which helped Aycliffe to their victory in a tense finish.
