The proposed Five Acres project in nearby Brafferton is creative, inventive and inspiring. The development of a field in Brafferton, bequeathed to the Five Acre Community Garden based at ROF 59, is on track to making a life changing dream a community based reality, and Aycliffe Radio’s community based show ‘Around Town’ is committed to doing everything it can to help in the creation and development of this amazing eco friendly agricultural and educational facility.
The greatest champions of this exciting initiative will be those using the facility whilst learning all manner of hands on skills and abilities. Animal Therapy and Welfare will play an important part, using animals on site in therapy sessions as well as working alongside animal husbandry professionals to learn the skills needed to care for them.
The horticultural part of the site will be used to facilitate the farm to fork project. Poly tunnels and designated sustainable walkways will create an ideal learning environment for the key skills necessary for growing their own food. Access to qualified professionals will enable them to design and create a sensory and community garden while learning the necessary skills to plant, grow and maintain the garden areas. A centralised customised barn will be designated base camp, incorporating its cookery school and on-site cafe. It will also provide office space, an education suite used to teach key skills in independent living as well as ICT skills designed to provide a broad range of skills to use when looking for employment or living more independently.
