Mayor Ken Robson and MP Paul Howell, both attended our Women’s Institute ‘Sweet Delights Event’ on Friday 2nd September at St Clares Church Hall, and what a delight it was.
The ladies of the WI have long enjoyed a reputation for fine food and cookery skills which was underlined by the sheer diversity of dishes available. As a fundraising event this evening is perennially popular with the ladies and their guests. Special guests this year were Mayor of Great Aycliffe, Ken Robson, accompanied by the Mayoress, Elaine Robson, who is in fact a WI member and our Member of Parliament, Paul Howell, accompanied by his lovely wife Lillian.
Mayor Ken opened the proceedings by making a short speech thanking the ladies for their hospitality and the invitation. There then followed a first course of soup and a roll, as an appetiser of what was to come. Each guest was encouraged to try three of the dishes on offer which all looked delicious.
The ladies of the WI do an amazing job and are often to be seen selling their wares at events such as ACORN Petting Zoo and these are always eagerly anticipated.
A fantastic time was had by all who attended, and it was a real pleasure to talk to many of the ladies present. MP Paul made a great summing up speech to draw the event to a close and everyone went home with a full tummy and a happy face.
Thank you ladies, for a wonderful evening and please may I come again next year?
Cllr Ken Robson, Mayor of Aycliffe
