Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring got back to winning ways with an excellent seven wicket victory at home to Northallerton 1st XI in the NYSD 2nd division. The visitors elected to bat first and at 114 for 2 looked to be heading for a big score, despite some hostile fast bowling from Aycliffe’s James Layfield-Carroll who took 2 for 28.

However the introduction of left arm spinner Luke Telford (photo attached) into the attack had a dramatic effect as Northallerton lost their last 8 wickets for just 16 runs and Telford (sponsored by Pheonix Energy) finished with a season’s best 6 for 26 as the visitors were dismissed for just 130 after 41.3 overs.

In reply, Aycliffe got off to a flying start with opener Joe Haines smashing a brilliant 52 from just 60 balls, including eight boundaries and a six. When he was dismissed, captain Adam Gittins continued the good work with an unbeaten 35 to see Aycliffe home after just 25.4 overs.

The second team were well beaten by nine wickets away at high flying Maltby 2nd XI in the NYSD 4th division. Aycliffe chose to bat first and were skittled for 72 after 19.5 overs with only Steve Sweeney (15 runs) and Dylan Tribley (14 runs) reaching double figures. In reply the homeside romped to victory in just 13 overs despite some decent bowling from 14 year old Lucas Pilling (1 for 20) and 13 year old Harry Wright (0-11) (sponsored by Commercial Expert Ltd).

The club’s u13’s team (see photo above) had a fantastic victory by 3 wickets away at Wolviston in the NYACC League. Batting first the homeside were restricted to 73 for 9 in their 20 overs thanks to some superb Aycliffe bowling from Josh Imerson (4 for 15), Matty Greaves (3 for 12) and Leo Mercy (2 for 15).

In reply, Aycliffe reached their winning target with ten balls in hand thanks to excellent innings from Matty Greaves (15 runs) and a nail biting unbroken 8th wicket partnership by David Robinson, who top scored with an unbeaten 16 and Jack Paylor who batted well to finish 7 not out, seeing their team home for a memorable first win of the season.
