The Knit and Chat Group on a Monday between 12.30 and 2 p.m. is gaining interest at Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre, everyone there is clicking away with their needles.
The majority of the people were knitting for a purpose, toy, hats, scarves, gloves to go out to Africa, some have brought along crocheting to pass the time, whilst others have just come along to enjoy a chat and a cup of tea/coffee.
Vicky Hewish who is secretary of the Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre Management Committee and who set up the group said, “knitting is gaining popularity and it is good to see older people handing down their skills to the younger generation.
Knitting is new to me but it is very therapeutic. The aim of the group is to knit for children in an orphanage in Moldova in Africa. We are doing this in conjunction with Lisa Greenow at Xcel Church.  There was a knitting group at Jackson’s Coffee Shop at the Xcel Centre but the venue at the Youth Centre is much more accessible.
We will be looking to provide wool and needles shortly for those who do not have them”. The cost of the session £2 which includes a cup of tea/coffee, in fact the kettle is always on during the session. All you need to do is bring along your needles and wool and join in the chat.
For more information, ring the centre on 307522 and speak to Joan or Vicky.
