It’s been a very eventful year so far for Athena Sports Academy’s display team, Akrovasía, who are based within the Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. The team started the year at the national ‘Gymfest’ event in Leeds, winning the team’s first award. Then came an appearance on the famous Britain’s Got Talent stage in Manchester where they performed in front of the judges including Simon Cowell, which despite making it through to the next round with a resounding “four yes’s”, they never made the live finals.
The display team took on board feedback from the BGT judges and came up with a fantastic new routine for ‘Gymfusion’ North which took place at the York Barbican. This routine was superbly choreographed and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience, many of whom were still talking about the performance after the event had finished. Evidently, the performance was also well received from the hosts, British Gymnastics, who invited the club to perform the same routine at their Gala Evening at the British Championships Weekend held in the Liverpool Echo Arena. It was certainly an honour for the club to get such a highly recommended invite to this amazing event.
The Gala was an amazing occasion for the club as our gymnasts took to the stage to perform their routine to a soldout auditorium! The routine plucked at the heartstrings, with the gymnasts wearing t-shirts featuring their insecurities and regular insults, only to remove them during the performance, to disregard the negatives and reveal their true positive thoughts and goals. This will be a weekend which will never be forgotten by coaches, parents and gymnasts who also got to meet Olympians Claudia Fragapane and Ellie Downie. Clearly the Akrovasía team made quite an impression as they were also asked to perform on the Championship Floor during this major competition. Next up for the team – a trip to the capital for the London Gymnastics Festival, in October.
