When Newtonian Joyce McCartin reached 70 she didn’t want a Party, but after a lot of pressure agreed to hold a BBQ, but instead of gifts asked that donations be made to an Indian Charity run by Catholic Priest Fr. Sarves. He has provided a village for elderly and disabled people of al faiths; some he picked up dying on the roadside, took them in, washed, fed and gave them a bed to die in with dignity.
Family and friends gave money for the food and drink and those who attended the BBQ gave cash and others donated before and after the event, rasing a total of £1,000.
Son Stephen and nephew Rob did the cooking from 11am until early evening. Further raffles and gifts added another £544 to the fund and the Parish have adopted the charity for the next 12 months.
Daughter-in-law Cheryl worked hard in the kitchen assisted by 14 year old nephew John.  Maria painted  faces, arms etc. and she gave the proceeds to the charity.  Joyce’s friend Lucy’s partner John from Durham entertained the children with magic tricks and balloons.
Children in the Indian village are being educated and the able bodied adults help with the day to day work.
Joyce wishes to thank all who supported the fundraiser
