Talented young footballers from the Great Aycliffe area battled it out for the annual Woodham Sports Academy Year 5 Football Tournament. Enthusiastic pupils from four local primary schools fought it out for the title won last year by Stephenson Way.In the end it was Suagr Hill Primary School that proved victorious, triumphing over rival teams from Walworth, Vane Road and Woodham Burn, beating Vane Road B team in a tight and tense final 2-1. Every student taking part received certificates and medals from Woodham Sports Academy Director Liam Clough. Mr Clough said he had been impressed with the standard of football on show. “The idea is to give the pupils an opportunity to come to school and get a feeling of what it is like to compete competitively for their school in a local tournament against friends and teammates from other schools.  The important thing is that the students have fun and enjoy themselves”. The tournament followed a yearlong programme delivered by Woodham Football Academy, where year 5 and 6 students came into Woodham and worked with Andy Collett, Neil Maddison and Kevin Dawson of Premier Player on a Thursday evening free of charge.
Due to the success of this initiative, Woodham Sports Academy is delighted to announce that this provision will continue in September, and students will work with the new Newton Aycliffe First Team Manager Danny Mellanby on a Thursday evening at the Academy.
