During the last week of June, Woodham Technology College held its first work related learning week for all Year 10 students. The aim was to make sure that students have the best possible understanding of what is on offer for them when leaving school in Year 11.
“Ensuring that our students leave Woodham with the skills required to progress successfully into employment is crucial to the vision here at school’ said Mrs Sarah McGinnety, Assistant Headteacher.
A variety of events took place at a number of post 16 providers in County Durham.
At Darlington College and Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, students took part in taster workshops to experience life in a further education setting. Workshops encompassed traditional AS and A level subject areas as well as those of a vocational nature.
Those students considering higher education visited Teesside University where they had a campus tour and met some of the current undergraduates.
Key information was given throughout the day to clear up some of the misunderstandings about university education and what this will mean for students in the current financial climate.
‘Giving students a flavour of what the future could hold for them through work related visits is vital in helping our students to make intelligent decisions about their next steps. We look forward to more events of a similar nature in the next academic year,’ said Mr Jenkins, Head of Year 10.
