A local manufacturer has secured a £20,000 work contract after utilising an Aycliffe training centre’s facilities to fulfil the order. Izumi Products has fulfilled a significant order thanks to an overflow service provided by S.W. Durham Training (SWDT).

The manufacturer, which produces innovative precision hydraulic tools for the electricity distribution construction industry, was able to use SWDT’s state of the art equipment to deliver a large contract to produce hydraulic press tools for a client.  The company did not have the capacity to fulfil the order using their own machines, so signed a hire agreement with SWDT to ensure they could deliver the work within the timeframes required.

Jenny Williams, managing director of Izumi Products, said that without SWDT’s support, they would have had to deliver the work over a much longer timeframe, something that would have cost the company money.

She said: “We have enjoyed a busy period lately, which is fantastic for the business.  However, we operate in a sector in which capital investments like machinery and equipment can spiral into many thousands of pounds.   The availability of cutting edge equipment at SWDT means that we don’t need to purchase additional equipment until we are absolutely in a position to invest, and that’s a hugely helpful resource for businesses during what remain quite unpredictable trading conditions, especially small businesses that may find it difficult to predict future workload.”

The company made use of SWDT’s equipment after seeing it when they attended an engineering forum at the organisation’s multi-million pound training centre.  In addition to the machine hire, the firm has also employed an apprentice through SWDT and put one of their employees through a short course.

SWDT is based in large, modern, purpose built premises in Newton Aycliffe and has a comprehensive, fully equipped training centre and their facilities boast cutting edge manufacturing and engineering equipment.

Charl Erasmus, chief executive of SWDT, said: “SWDT is a not-for-profit organisation, and one that was set up to support the needs of industry in the North East.  We have some of the most advanced manufacturing and engineering equipment on the market for use by our learners, but much of this equipment is only in use for a small proportion of the day.

“Hiring out our equipment for commercial use is an innovative way of supporting the local business community, while also generating revenue that we can reinvest for the greater good of the North East manufacturing and engineering sectors.  It is a win-win solution.”
