Newton Aycliffe FC begin their Buildbase FA Vase campaign this Saturday (12 November) with a home tie at Moore Lane. Last year’s fantastic efforts, which saw Aycliffe reach the last 16, mean that they have been exempt until the Second Round Proper of the national competition. The game will kick off at Moore Lane at 3:00pm with admission £6 adults & £4 concessions. Our visitors on Saturday will be Worksop Town, claimed to be the fourth oldest football club in the world. Worksop play in the Premier Division of the Northern Counties East League which is the equivalent level to the Northern League Division One. They won at Malvern Town in the First Round Proper to earn them their first game against a North East side since they played Bishop Auckland in the FA Cup in 2001. Saturday is undoubtedly Aycliffe’s most important game of the season so far. They are hoping that Newtonians turn out in force to support the team to see if they can emulate last season’s efforts in the FA Vase. Meanwhile Aycliffe reached the halfway point in their Northern League season with a 3-0 over Ryhope Colliery Welfare.  Both these teams went into this match on the back of 6 consecutive league defeats. Aycliffe’s confidence received a boost after only 4 minutes when Jordan Laidler received a short free-kick from John Campbell, beat 2 players and chipped Ryhope keeper Chris Rookes for 1-0. There were few chances created until the 26th minute when John Campbell scored direct from a free-kick 22 yards out, for 2-0. Both sides then had a chance each in quick succession, but keepers Rookes and Brass made good saves. It was Aycliffe who found the net again on 45 minutes when Campbell hit a long-range shot into the corner of the net, giving Rookes no chance.  Half-time 3-0. The second half was a cagey affair with both sides seeking a breakthrough but without really troubling the keepers. Aycliffe now face an away league game at Bishop Auckland on Tuesday 6 November before turning their attention to Saturday’s cup game.
