DUCB Profile (info from music durham): Durham University Concert Band is a non-auditioning ensemble open to all brass, woodwind and percussion players. Its aim is to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere where everyone feels welcome, while at the same time as playing music to an excellent standard. The conductors always seek to choose music which is both accessible and musically challenging, and the band’s repertoire is vast and varied – last year this included film scores, Broadway musicals, full concert band suites, contemporary compositions and classical works.

The band rehearses weekly on Sunday afternoons and usually performs at least three concerts per year. In recent years, DUCB have also developed links within the local community and now hope to run an annual outreach event working with children from local primary schools. They also hold frequent socials throughout the year, which in the past have included everything from band meals and bar crawls to summer ice-creams by the river.

Performing: Ride (Samuel Hazo) , Cloudburst (Eric Whitacre), Pirates of the Caribbean, Palladio (Karl Jenkins)

DUBB: Durham University Brass Band otherwise known as DUBB is a friendly, non-auditioned ensemble determined to show the university the true meaning of brass band-ing! they perform regularly in and around Durham for numerous yearly concerts and marches, last year they held a concert with the Reg Vardy band they also performed at the Durham Regatta prior to their tour of Belgium. DUBB has performed increasingly well at UniBrass in recent years moving from last place to seventh and to third in subsequent years, also picking up prizes for ‘Most Improved Band’ and ‘Best Student Composition’ along the way. They attribute their success to their belief that a band does not need to be auditioned, but simply committed, and for that reason, any player has a seat with us as long as they are committed!

Durham University Brass Band is a vibrant and friendly ensemble, determined to show that brass bands are still relevant within a modern university community. The band is non-auditioning and committed to welcoming players of all abilities while also putting on a fantastic show.

DUBB are committed to honouring the legacy of brass bands in the United Kingdom and remembering the importance of the mining industry which led to the establishment of so many of these groups. Due to this, we feel special ties with Durham Cathedral, an incredible space in the heart of an area whose history and culture owes so much to, and continues to be influenced by, the mining industry.
