Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s first team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store finished their season with a four wicket defeat at home to Barnard Castle 2nd team in a low scoring game.
Electing to bat first Aycliffe were skittled for just 42 after 10.4 overs and only opening batsmen John Cavanagh managed to reach double figures when he top scored with ten runs.
In reply the visitors also struggled, but they eventually reached their target of 43 after 13.1 overs for the loss of six wickets, despite some good bowling from both Cavanagh (2 for 13) and Colin Myers (2 for 10). Aycliffe first team’s playing record for the season was played 26, won 14, lost 10, drawn one and one game abandoned due to rain. Total points 376 and a creditable 5th place in the NYSD 2nd division table.
The second team finished their season with a comprehensive seven wicket victory away at Thornaby to complete an excellent double over them. The home side chose to bat first and were dismissed for a below par 74 after 32.5 overs with Jack Slatcher again the pick of the bowlers taking 4 for 7 from his 9 over spell and Michael Howe chipping in with 2 for 13.
In reply Aycliffe romped to victory in the 22nd over thanks to good contributions from Ben Nicholson (19 runs), Adam Gittins (17 not out) and Michael Howe (13 not out).
The second team improved upon last years points total by 23 to finish with 280 points from their 26 games after recording 9 wins, 13 defeats, two drawn games and two games abandoned because of the weather to finish in a respectable 9th place out of 14 in the NYSD 3rd division.
The Cricket Club hold their AGM at the Sports Club on Sunday 4th October at 6pm and all members are invited to attend.
