Awarded “Outstanding” status by Ofsted in 2014 and located in the purpose-built learning centre, The Work Place, Durham SCITT has been training teachers in the North-East since 2005. The fact that it has continued to grow is testament to its ability to deliver high quality trainees which schools actively look for when it comes to filling posts. Impressive employment rates and effective partnerships with schools, mean we are in the position to offer outstanding teacher training.

At Durham SCITT we pride ourselves on the personal approach. We know there is no such thing as a “typical trainee” so we don’t provide a one-size-fits-all course. We will challenge you, and we do expect high standards but we ensure your mentor colleagues and fellow trainees are there for you, helping you to grow and become a great teacher. And we offer training days tailored to your needs to help you develop quicker.

We know being a teacher is a unique profession. But we are not looking for a superman or woman. Yes, you will need a good academic background but we’re looking for people who also have a passion for their subject, and who are able to share that with young people. For more information on academic requirements please see our website www.durhamscitt.co.uk

The course runs from September until the following July. Initial training will be held at The Work Place in Newton Aycliffe followed by placements in at least two schools in our partnership. Trainees who successfully complete the course will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the opportunity to study towards gaining a PGCE which can be used as credits towards a Masters qualification.

Bursaries up to £26,000 are available to certain subjects depending on degree classification. There are also scholarships available in some subject areas (£28,000). Course tuition fees are £9,000, however, loans are available through Student Finance England as well as other funding to cover living expenses whilst studying.

Regardless of your qualifications if you think you would make a great teacher please get in touch if you would like to discuss entry requirements.
