Dear Syd,

Well done for refuting Irene Hewitson’s totally unfounded comments regarding the political bias of the Newton News (w.e. 20th May 2016) I can perhaps be accused of sometimes submitting, and I quote from Irene’s letter, “long winded sanctimonious ramblings” unquote; however, I am not a Labour Councillor. I may be married to one but I am not a member of the Labour Party, or any other party come to that, and the views I hold are my own views.

I have always found the Newton News to be a very unbiased paper, open to debate from a wide variety of people wanting to discuss issues that affect our town. As the Editor has said, he gives free access to his columns to all providing it is not libellous. It is hardly surprising that residents complained about the press and television coverage of their estate, not all of it true; so, perhaps like myself, they wondered about the motive behind it!

Long may family members of local politicians hold their own views without being accused of any bias. Women were emancipated years ago and probably not since the days of Dickens have we not been able to form and air our OWN opinions. Well done Syd for having an open, independent mind and encouraging others to be the same by printing their letters, Keep up the good work. I, like many residents, look forward to Newton News each week.
