The big kick-off to the school holidays gets underway with a series of “On the Ball” football camps at leisure centres throughout County Durham, but not at Newton Aycliffe.

The three to five day skill sessions for five to 14-year-olds cover all the basics of the beautiful game from ball control to tactics and games.

They are in addition to the full range of other leisure centre activities to keep youngsters fit, healthy and occupied during the long summer break. The sports range from dodgeball to gymnastics and swimming.

Richie Hill, Sport and Physical Activity Development Officer, Durham County Council, said: “We hope to score a big success with the football camps. They are a one-off opportunity to get expert coaching in a fun and friendly environment.”

The camps at Spennymoor Leisure Centre: Tues 13, Wed 14, Thurs 15th August from 1pm- 4pm, 5-11 years – £6 per day or £15 for three days
