Queens Jubilee Celebrations
Another date for your diary folks. In order to get everyone in the mood for June 4th we have invited Anita Atkinson to come down from Stanhope to talk about the Queen. She will be bringing with her some of her memorabilia collection which is the largest collection in the world with some of the items dating back to 1761. It promises to be an interesting and fascinating evening about the British Monarchy which will set us up for our village celebrations on the 4th June.
The Royal event will be held in St Michael’s Church Heighington on May 12th starting at 7pm and entry will be free so, whether you are young or old, monarchists or not, do join us.
St Michael’ Egg Rolling tradition
The Easter Sunday church service held in St Michael’s Church was excellent in every way thanks to Rev Lissa Scott, Rev David Lucas, the church choir who sang so well and the families and children who filled our ancient church.
The service was followed by traditional egg rolling with large chocolate eggs given to the children who managed to roll their eggs, underarm, the furthest down the green and, to make sure there were no disappointed little ones, they all received a Cadbury’s Creme egg thanks to Ruth Lee.
St. Michael’s Church Clock winder upperer – if there is such a word! I met Phil Ashlee the other day when I went into church to open it up for the day. As it was quite early in the morning I was a little surprised meeting him so early but he explained that he had just come down from the tower after winding up the clock – something he had been doing every eight days for over 30 years and something that many people relied on but few asked the question, how did the clock continue to work. Well we know now, Phil is the man and we all owe him our thanks for turning out in the rain, wind and snow to keep our village clock ticking and chiming at the appointed hour – thank you Phil.
It also made me think of other members of our community who have given, or continue to give, their time for the benefit of the Parish – perhaps more of them later.
And finally – another big thank you to the anonymous person, or persons, who have decorated the village with beautifully painted small stones which have been dotted around the village – for those people who have never seen them – look carefully – it’s worth finding them.
