During the Summer the Newton Aycliffe branch of Care and Support Pathways, who are now located in the Leisure Centre in Newton Aycliffe, commissioned Greenfield Arts and students at Greenfield College to create artwork for their new venue.
It was seen as an ideal opportunity to involve the children who had enrolled for the Summer School as part of the transition programme which supports children in their move from Primary to Secondary School.
It was an exciting and enriched programme of events where Year 7 students worked with adults and staff from Care and Support Pathways to start the creative project, creating prints using a variety of techniques during an afternoon led by Greenfield Arts staff.
In September the same group of students continued working on the artworks, supported by Greenfield Arts staff. The collection of 22 canvases, showcasing the prints created during the summer in geometric shapes, were delivered to the Newton Aycliffe branch of Care and Support Pathways by the students involved on Monday 4th November 2013.
Greenfield are pleased to have been able to support their local community in this creative way, using the skills and expertise of the staff and providing new students at Greenfield with added confidence and the knowledge that they have helped other members of the local community.
Care and Support Pathways is the new name for the Durham County Council service who provide day services for adults with learning disabilities, cognitive impairments and physical disabilities, and people living in County Durham who require sensory support and have been assessed as requiring a day service.
The students were given a guided tour of the facilities on offer in Newton Aycliffe and were very impressed with the Sensory Room and the way in which they were made to feel welcome both by the staff and clients. They felt very proud to be part of a project that offers a very important focus to the life of an important group of people on the Town.
Melanie Stubbs Assistant Head Teacher at Greenfield who has responsibility for Transition across the whole school said “Students at Greenfield have so much to offer to the Community and participating in a project like this allows them to see that care and respect for everyone are values that prepare them for the diverse society in which they live”.
