A former apprentice is on the road to success after landing a prestigious award.
Lee Teasdale, who is a new recruit to Durham County Council’s highways maintenance team, has won an award from Derwentside College following the success of his apprenticeship.
The 20-year-old from Crook undertook a two year Level 2 apprenticeship which saw him spending four days a week on the frontline, working on roads and footpaths with the council.
Lee’s fifth day of the week was spent at the college studying theory.
Following the success of his apprenticeship, Lee earned a permanent job with the council as a highways operative, in November last year.
He has now landed the college’s Excellence in the Construction Apprenticeship accolade, in its Annual Achievement Awards, having been nominated by his lecturer.
Lee was described by the college as “an excellent role model to others.”
It added: “With an excellent attitude and commitment, Lee was an amazing apprentice from the outset!
“Always leading by example and working to the highest of standards, Lee continually showed the desire to improve his skills and gain more knowledge.”
Lee was “shocked,” “excited” and a “bit nervous” to receive the award for which he was presented with a glass trophy.
“I was pleased that the college recognised my commitment and effort but at the same time I was nervous and I knew I would get a right ribbing from the lads. I believe the award helped with me getting a full time position within the council.”
He is now happy in his new role and said: “It is good, I enjoy it. I like the variation – no two jobs are the same.
“Obviously there is the change of scenery – you are never in the same place.”
Neil Summerson, the council’s contracts manager, said: “We are very pleased for Lee to have won this award. His attitude and performance while with us as an apprentice and since he came on board full time has been second-to-none and he definitely has a bright future ahead of him.”
