Investing in Children works to ensure that children and young people have a voice, and are able to influence the services they use.

DISC Detached Youth Work has recently applied and achieved Investing in Children status.

The work that we do meets Durham’s 12 key improvement priorities: through improve places to go, things to do for teenagers. These priorities have been based on thorough evidence and consultation with children, young people and their families. The importance of delivering an effective service to meet this priority is central to improving outcomes for young people within County Durham. As such the DISC Detached Youth Work delivers flexible, innovative, service user-led provision.

DISC Detached Youth Work provides regular sessions within Burnhope village, Hamsteels Estate in Esh Winning and Langley Park. These sessions are developed based on service user need and consultation. The project also delivers in line with Every Child Matters and the national youth work framework. The project provides teenagers with the opportunity to access and achieve accredited learning and qualifications. In addition, informal learning is monitored and measured using recorded outcomes.

The sessions delivered by DISC Detached Youth Work have been extremely varied in order to meet the needs of young people.

Regular sessions have included:

Football, Dance, Arts & Crafts, Informal Education,

Off site activities have included:

Quad biking, Fishing, Ice skating and Theme Parks

Young people that take part have said: “Everything we do is decided as a group”. “We can suggest ideas or sometimes the workers ask us what we’d like to do”. Coming to the group keeps us out of trouble and gives us something positive to do”
