Both of Newton Aycliffe’s senior teams had their respective fixtures cancelled at the weekend after the heavy storms that hit the north east left the local playing surfaces waterlogged.
However, during the week, the club’s under 15’s team travelled to Langley Park in the Durham County Junior league and thanks to career best bowling figures of 4 for 22 from Aycliffe’s Jon Hope, the home side were restricted to 81 for 8 in their 20 overs. In reply Aycliffe opening batsman Tom Wickins got his side off to a solid start with 14 runs.
Ben Nicholson then took over and dominated proceedings with the bat hitting an excellent unbeaten 31 and putting Aycliffe into a winning position. The steady drizzle then turned to heavy rain forcing the game to be abandoned as Aycliffe were agonisingly close to victory needing just 14 runs with 8 wickets and 7.2 overs in hand.
Newton Aycliffe’s under 13’s team played well, but still lost away at title favourites Darlington, despite an excellent all round performance from captain Josh Pearson. Pearson took the only wicket to fall in Darlington’s innings as they scored 83 for 1 from their 20 overs. In reply the Aycliffe skipper top scored with 25 and Sam Dobinson scored 9 as the visitors were restricted to 69 for 7 from their alloted 20 overs.
