Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team sponsored by Franks The Flooring Store lost by 7 wickets in a disappointing performance away at Normanby Hall 2nd XI in the NYSD 2nd division.
Asked to bat first Aycliffe were bowled out for a below par 137 after 42.4 overs, despite another excellent half century from Tom Young, who scored 62 and good contributions from Luke Telford (37 runs) and Michael Howe (18 runs). In reply the home side eased to a straight forward victory for the loss of three wickets after 36 overs.
However in mid-week, the first team had a great result when they travelled to Shildon Railway and defeated their first team by 24 runs in the quarter finals of the NYSD 15/15 cup. Aycliffe were asked to bat first and scored a respectable 117 for 9 from their 15 overs with Chris Palmer (30 runs), Michael Howe (23 runs) and Tom Young (23 runs) the main contributors. In reply Shildon were bowled out for just 92 after 13.5 overs with Luke Telford the pick of the Aycliffe bowlers taking an impressive 4 for 9 from his three overs of left arm spin.
The second team had an outstanding six wicket home victory over league leaders and previously unbeaten Shildon Railway 1st XI in the NYSD third division. Shildon chose to bat first and were were skittled for just 56 thanks to some superb bowling and fielding from the home side. Dan Craggs was the pick of the Aycliffe bowlers, taking 4 for 13 and he was supported well by both Patrick Howe (3 for 14) and Jack Slatcher (3 for 24).
Captain Adam Gittins (sponsored by Pheonix Energy) again batted with his usual mixture of patience and skill as he carried his bat for an unbeaten 27 and with Trevor Shingler chipping in with 11 not out, Aycliffe reached their winning target after 25.3 overs to give them their third win in a row.
The club’s u18’s team finished their season with a 29 run defeat away at Mainsforth. The home side scored 116 for 6 with Aycliffe leg spin bowler Patrick Howe again in the wickets taking 3 for 8 from four overs. In reply Aycliffe were bowled out for 87 after 18.1 overs with the main contributions coming from Ryan Patrick (20 runs), Josh Pearson (18 runs) and acting captain Tom Wickins who scored 17 runs.
The u15’s had an impressive nine wicket victory at home to Mainsforth in the County Durham junior league. The visitors scored 116 for 4 in their 20 overs, with Ryan Patrick taking three catches to equal the Aycliffe u15’s club record for the most catches in a match.
Acting captain Dan Bowmer (50 not out) and Arran Taylor (38 not out) set a new Aycliffe club record for the 2nd wicket as the pair put on a superb partnership of 112 to see their team home to victory after 17.4 overs.
