Opportunity for Public to Speak

In Early July we reported that the Labour Controlled Town Council was looking at the future of the annual Fireworks Display. It had requested a report from the County Durham Safety Advisory Group on the staging of the event for this year.
Most Councillors at the Recreation Meeting on 2nd July had expressed support for the event to continue with perhaps some additional costs on measures involving extra barriers and security on the site at the School Aycliffe Sports Complex.
But a final decision could only be made when the final report from the Safety Advisory Group was available. The Town Council is holding a Special Recreation meeting on Thursday 29th August, in the Council Chamber starting at 7.15pm.
Following that meeting the Council will hold an Extraordinary Meeting to consider the findings of the Recreation meeting and make a decsion on whether to continue the Fireworks Display.
Members of the public can attend and indeed there is a part of the meeting where the public can ask questions, all they need do is tell the Town Clerk they wish to speak prior to the commencement of the meeting.  Tel: 300700.
The Safety Advisory Group Report  on the Fireworks Display should be available from the Town Council’s website from Friday 23rd August.  It will be interesting to see what the report has to say or recommend and whether the Great Aycliffe Fireworks Display will continue or not based on the contents of that report.
Many residents feel it would be a backward step to cancel it as this would only encourage more fireworks being let off in the streets and throughout the community affecting elderly, pets, and an increased fire risk, whereas a well run public  display saves everyone money and provides a safe and enjoyable family occasion for the entire community.
