Work to restore a historic Weardale bridge is to begin next month.
Durham County Council will be carrying out repairs to The Causeway Bridge in Wolsingham, with works starting on Tuesday 6 May.
Dating back to 1894, the bridge requires extensive refurbishment due to its age.
To accommodate the works, which will include the installation of scaffolding, the bridge will temporarily be closed to vehicles for approximately three weeks.
During this time, a diversion will be in place for vehicles however the bridge will remain open for pedestrians.
The remainder of the project will then be completed using temporary traffic lights, with a width limit of 3.25m. Any vehicles wider than this measurement will need to use a diversionary route.
The full project is expected to be complete in early 2026. Two additional closures will be required during the works, with these dates to be announced once they have been confirmed.
There will be no road closures in place for TruckFest, Stanhope Show and Wolsingham Show.
Mark Readman, Durham County Council’s head of highways, said: “This bridge is over 130 years old and requires a significant amount of restoration to ensure it can continue to be used for many years to come.
“The works have been carefully planned to keep any disruption to a minimum. We’d like to thank residents and businesses in advance for their patience while we work to preserve this historically important bridge.”
