Things are now settling down over the Town Centre Market issue as the stallholders have refused to take the Car Park site on Greenwell Road offered by the County Council.
Great Aycliffe Residents Association were considering calling a public meeting to guage opinion and work towards changing the County Council’s mind on allowing use of the Cubby site.
The general concensus is that even if the Cubby site was available the stallholders would find the costs involved too high as there would be no subsidy from the Town or County Councils.
So we are back to ‘Square One’ with the ball firmly in the court of the Town Centre owners, Freshwater who said they were looking to bring new ideas on the provision of a market.
They said they are looking for a new management company to run our Market, possibly on two days a week, subject to agreement. The question is will it come off and when?
As Newton News have no dialogue with Freshwaters we are unable to inform residents of their future intentions.
Whilst the Council have refused  use of the derelict land next to the Cubby for a market, it does not mean we are content to see it continue as an unsightly mess.
After 30 years it is time they tidied up the area – it might also help the sale of this land for a suitable town centre purpose.
