A total of £17,000 was raised in Newton Aycliffe for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal thanks to collections at local schools, businesses and pubs in the town.

The charity effort involved local people and volunteers donating their time and giving generously.

A special thanks to all volunteers from Newton Aycliffe Indoor Bowling Club, Marilyn, Pauline and all the ladies from the Phoenix Club and Gillian at Co-Operative Funeral Care for their help during the appeal.

Thanks should also go to the staff at Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Wilko and The Post Office for their support.

The funds raised will go towards providing welfare services to the armed forces community living throughout the UK.

Ian Robinson, Poppy Appeal organiser, said: “It’s been a great effort by everyone involved to raise almost £17,000 for the Poppy Appeal and it wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity and support of local people. Hopefully, we’ll raise even more in 2018, which will mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.”
