Newton Aycliffe bounced back to form as they recorded successive victories for the first time since August.
A run of three consecutive defeats had seen the Newtonians ship nine goals in two league games and get knocked out of the Durham Challenge Cup by second division outfit Whickham.
But after a morale-boosting 3-1 win at home to bottom-side Hebburn, Allan Oliver’s men handed Bedlington Terriers a deserved defeat on their home ground.
Jamie Owens was among the goals once again, netting two to take his tally for the campaign to 24 in all competitions.
But the town’s only semi-professional football club will have been disappointed only to win by a one-goal margin after thoroughly dominating proceedings in Northumberland.
Andrew Spence made his second debut in goal, after returning to the club from Sunderland RCA, but he was an onlooker for the first hour.
The first half was a question of when, not if, Owens would break the deadlock. He saw an early free-kick saved and narrowly missed the target on a number of occasions as he and fellow striker Danny Wilson proved too hot to handle for the Terriers’ defence.
But the pressure finally told just after the half-hour mark, as Owens received a Wilson pass, burst into the area and slotted home left-footed.
It was 2-0 in the 59th minute when Harrison Davies – who had himself gone close minutes earlier – saw his dangerous corner deflected into the net from a Bedlington defender.
Aycliffe were coasting but were guilty of taking their foot off the pedal too quickly, as the home side fought back.
The Terriers fought back to score twice in four minutes; first Martin Brittain released Dylan Williamson who beat Spence and then David Brown levelled matters with a neat finish.
It appeared as though Aycliffe had thrown away two points but the Royal Blues instantly refound their form.
Just five minutes after Brown’s equaliser, Wilson released his strike partner once again and Owens rounded the Terriers keeper and tapped into the net.
There was to be no chance-taking from the visitors and if anyone was likely to add further goals it was those in blue.
Owens went close to a treble while Wilson blazed over and Michael Gibson saw a late effort saved.
Off the field, Newton Aycliffe FC are planning for their Christmas Fayre. It will be held at Moore Lane Sports Club on Saturday November 30, between 11am and 2pm.
Entertainment includes Santa’s Grotto, a bouncy castle and face painting, while there are dozens of stalls to purchase Christmas items, including jewellery, hand-made crafts, cards and festive socks and a cake stall.
