Residents group ACORN are thrilled to announce that they have been successful in being awarded a special award in the Community garden section of social housing provider livin’s Blooming Marvellous garden competition.

Many ACORN members were concerned about the deep scars on grassy areas caused by cars and delivery vehicles, consequently when the group were successful in gaining funding from “In your Neighbourhood” a project funded by Durham County Council they threw themselves into purchasing and refurbishing half whisky tubs which were placed in places where they could discourage anti-social parking.

Competition became quite intense between members as they vied to provide the best display of flowers and in some cases vegetables. ACORN Chair Ken Robson is very proud of what residents have achieved remarking that” so impressed were some local people that many have enquired as to whether they too can get involved”.

ACORN have also entered the community garden into the Northumberland in bloom competition and eagerly await results of judging.

The awards were given out at a lavish reception held at livins Durham gate headquarters and included a voucher from B&Q.

Many thanks for the support, help and advice given by DCC, livin, Great Aycliffe Town Council and Northumbria in Bloom.

Of course the real heroes behind the beautiful floral displays were those residents who planted weeded and watered the displays. Well done all.
