Students from Greenfield Community College have been showing their passion for the environment through having a strong voice and taking part in practical solutions.
Earlier this year students from Forest Elder tutor group attracted the attention of councillors as they voiced concern about the local environment in their T4S enquiry. Councillors were keen to listen to the students and accepted an invitation to Greenfield Community College to hear more about their concerns and solutions. The students are continuing to keep up an eco-friendly dialogue and help in practical ways, recently giving up their own time to take part in a litter pick with Shildon Town Council. Tutor Ms Airey was thrilled with their commitment, “It was a great outcome on the day although it was a shame about the weather!”
Student Leaders at Greenfield were also keen to visit Shildon Council regarding the environment and have been strong ambassadors for the school, sharing environmental concerns regarding waste management and realising the opportunities for recycling. They have helped lead their student conference ‘Make it Matter’ where the environment was one of the top concerns addressed.
The groups have subsequently been recognised for their passion for our planet and our community and were nominated for their contribution in the recent Skypan Awards. Greenfield Community College have also received a ‘Highly Commended’ accolade in the Durham County Council annual Environment Awards, great achievements and a testament to all the students involved in helping the community and wider environment.
