Environmental initiatives carried out by 3M, which has a manufacturing site at Aycliffe, have been recognised with a Big Tick award from the national organisation Business in the Community (BITC).

The accolade has come in the Marketplace Sustainability Leadership category of the annual awards and reflects the diversified technology company’s achievements in continuously improving the ways in which its products are made and how it carries out its business.

Its Heighington Lane plant at Aycliffe manufactures respirators for worker safety and products for the vehicle aftercare market. It contributed to the success with initiatives such as holding a sustainable transport event to give employees an insight into greener ways of getting about.

The award assessors were looking for businesses whose innovative thinking against short and long-term challenges and opportunities will transform business towards a more sustainable future.

Commenting, Stephen Howard, BITC’s chief executive said: “I congratulate 3M for its Big Tick, which recognises that it is part of a movement of companies creating value by living their values. We hope their example will inspire many more businesses to put responsible behaviour at the heart of how they do business.”
