Gold recipients – F Sgt Oliver Lakey and Mr Gareth Sloane receive their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards from Sqn Ldr John Scott

1407 (Newton Aycliffe) Squadron ATC recently held their annual presentation evening. The squadron continues to perform excellently, as highlighted by the number of awards and certificates gained by the cadets during 2012. With many parents in attendance, proceedings began with the enrolment of Cdt Appleton and continued with the presentation of 1st Class badges to Cdts Breden, Pallister, Peacock and Priestman A. Instructor Cadet lanyards were presented to F Sgts Kitching and Lakey following their completion of the cadet Method Of Instruction course.

1407 Squadron provides cadets with the opportunity to gain nationally recognised awards and qualifications. Thirteen bronze, eight silver and four gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards were presented along with three BTec First Diplomas in Public Services. A cheque was presented to Newton Aycliffe RAFA Wings Appeal by the cadets who had raised funds as part of their D of E Awards.

The second half of the evening saw the awarding of the squadron’s trophies for 2012 by Sector Commander Sqn Ldr John Scott.

– Tom Downs Cup for Endeavour and Service: Cdt Olley

– Scott Trophy for Citizenship: Cpl Simon

– Sports Trophy: Cpl Butterfield

– Crabbe Cup for Aircraft Recognition: Cpl Lowe

– Laverick Memorial Trophy for Shooting: Cpl Simon

– Boddy Trophy for Best NCO: Cpl Addison

– Fryer Shield for Cadet of the Year: Cpl Lowe

Certificates of Merit were also awarded to F Sgt Kitching and Cdts Armstrong and Priestman J. Cdt Flatters was promoted to Corporal and Cpl Addison was promoted to Sergeant.

The squadron weren’t the only ones giving out awards, with Head Quarters Air Cadets awarding two of Aycliffe’s members very prestigious certificates. A Certificate of Good Service was presented to CWO Dolan for her exemplary service while in the corps. The Commanding Officer Flt Lt Karin Scott was also presented a Certificate of Meritorious Service for all that she has done during her years of service.

Rounded off with a raffle and lots of photographs, the night was an excellent celebration of the achievements of all the members of 1407 squadron. Flt Lt Scott would like to thank all of the staff for their hard work and commitment to the squadron.
