March has been a very successful month for Athena Gymnastics Academy, jointly based in Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre and Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre. After the success of the Northern NDP’s Acro Regional finals where Athena’s Joseph Dunn and Evie Tombling got through to the National Finals in Stoke, and also the success of Daniel Wilkinson who got the Silver Medal in the NDP Tumbling Semi-Final and go through to the second semi final to be held in Coventry, over 50 of the clubs Gymnasts went to Durham for the local Deerness Floor Championships. The day was split into 3 sessions with over 500 gymnasts entering from 12 Clubs across the region with an age range from 4 years to 17 years. The group had Gymnasts in many of the levels from Disabilities, Novices, and Intermediate at both individual and pair categories.
Some of the categories on the day had over 40 gymnasts competing so the gymnasts had to be at their best to win the medals on offer. The coaches at the club were very proud of ALL the gymnasts that competed and gained 20 Gold, 8 Silver and 9 Bronze medals in a very tough competition. For many of the Athena gymnasts this was their first time in a competition so to come away with a medal was a huge achievement. Athena is a very young club and the progress shown by the gymnasts was superb.
Athena Gymnastics Academy run classes during the week and at the weekend. If anyone is interested in any of the classes please contact Sam on 07800 847527 or 01388 605946 for further information.
