After all the disruption caused by the snow, children at Aycliffe Village Primary School finally got to celebrate World Book Day!

Children in Year One led the assembly that day and their family members were invited to share this with them. Pupils wore some fantastic costumes and spent the day doing a variety of activities related to books.

Some classes made their own books while others devised board games and shared ideas about their favourite books.

At the end of the assembly, Head Teacher, Helen Sutherland said how pleased she was that the children and staff had made such a great effort to take part. She reminded everyone how important and special reading is and used quotes from Dr Seuss, Roald Dahl’s Matilda and Walt Disney to inspire and motivate children.

Other recent activities at Aycliffe Primary include Year 4 pupils working with an artist on ‘The Voices Project’ (arranged by the Baltic Museum) and a tree planting party led by Year 6 pupils.

This was as part of the work pupils have been doing towards their Green Tree Award. Last Sunday, a group of pupils sang during the Palm Sunday service at St Andrew’s Church. Aycliffe Village. This included a beautiful solo from a Year 2 pupil, Ruby, and the singing was very well received by members of the congregation.

Helen Sutherland took over as Head Teacher at Aycliffe Village in January and expressed how much she is enjoying the role and getting to know members of the school and wider community. “I have been made to feel very welcome by everyone. A parent governor recently said she can feel a real ‘buzz’ about the school and I am looking forward to continuing to build on this in the future. It is a lovely school with fantastic children and such a lot of potential.”
