As part of Woodham’s Leadership Academy, students from year 10 have recently completed the expedition section of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. This involved working collectively as a team to navigate their way round the Barnard Castle countryside whilst being completely self-sufficient for the weekend. To prepare for the expedition, students participated in weekly sessions to gain basic first aid skills, navigation techniques and prepare for the outdoors. These skills were utilised throughout the expedition as students experienced camping, cooking on stoves and map skills. Alongside this, the expedition was physically demanding as students carried all their equipment for the weekend and were involved in problem solving to navigate their route. All students demonstrated excellent perseverance, great determination and resilience to complete the expedition.
In addition to the expedition section, students are currently working towards completing the volunteering, skill, and physical sections of the Bronze Award. Students are overcoming a range of challenges and have embraced the opportunities they have received through participating in this programme. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is one that is recognised nationally and internationally, we are exceptionally proud of the commitment students have shown to complete the award.
