It’s that time again where everyone is taking part in the Halloween and Guy Fawkes events but what I would like to say to everyone pure and simply is keep your pumpkins up a height so our hedgehogs don’t eat the contents. Our prickly friends are very hungry at this time of year because they are preparing for hibernation, pumpkins make them very sick. Also fireworks can scare our hedgehogs and domestic pets, these should be banned. Finally, if you do make a bonfire, make sure that you build the same day as you light, your pile of logs to a hedgehog looks like home sweet home. I don’t want these beautiful mammals to suffer an agonising death, I am sure you all feel the same way, hopefully.
Thanks go to Alison, Brogan and Mark for saving a lovely Autumn juvenile, she is called Hetty, she arrived on Saturday night, I have mentioned before, any hedgehog found out in the day is in some sort of trouble, bless her, she has a parasite burden and an injured ear, she is responding well to treatment and is gaining weight, she will be here with the other 16 till spring! The other ones here are far too small to hibernate. They won’t wake up in spring because they haven’t got the body mass to sustain them. My smallest is just under 8ozs.
Thanks to Gail and everyone at the PCP Centre for inviting me in to raise awareness of our beautiful mammals, their lives are very challenging and difficult because of us and when I receive a hedgehog he or she is in trouble but I can take them out of harms way and it’s a great feeling they are beautiful and seem grateful when they start feeling better. Of course I couldn’t run this rescue without my supporters and friends, June, Valerie, Denise, also Peter and Teri.
Can I also thank finders for donations, Neil and Caz, Olivia’s finders, she is continuing to make progress but too small to release this year, and everyone else who has made donations because my time is best here with these little ones, thank you.
Pictured is Hetty, isn’t she beautiful, she is one of this years babies.
Tip Of The Week: If you should see a hedgehog out during the day whatever the size please get him or her help, they need rescuing so get them out of harms way, a high sided box with towels in then ring the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890801. For rescues in your area, please don’t let him or her go, releasing is not an option.
