South Shields Blacks U11 3 v Heighington FC U11 2
What an advert for U11 football, today’s game was. Two divisions separated the teams today but you wouldn’t have thought it once the game kicked off. Heighington found themselves 1-0 down at half time in a game which was extremely tight and played on a knife edge. 2-0 down with 25 minutes to go, before James Henderson got our lads back in it after getting on the end of a spectacular passing move which started from midfield. Will Farrow equalised in emphatic fashion when the ball dropped out of the air and he took a couple of lovely keep ups before smashing a shot into the bottom corner from distance……Matt Le Tissier style️.
Stout defending and pressing at either end as both sides pushed for the win. However, it was heartbreak for Heighington in the last minute as South Shields found the back of the net after a scramble in the box. However, the lads kept going until the end and didn’t let their heads drop and kept their attitude right and got behind each other. A performance the boys can be proud of and a performance to remember for various reasons. Extremely proud of this lot today, they really couldn’t have given anymore and put on a great show for the watching parents.
MOTM: Will Farrow, a warrior in midfield and a goal from the top drawer which I think will be remembered by those that witnessed it.
MOTM: Mitchell Stapleton, quickly becoming a force at centre back, dug his team out of many holes today and gave everything for his team mates.
RFYL Under 13 League Cup – Round 2
Heighington U13’s 4 v Whickham Fellside U13’s 2
Heighington progressed to the third round of the League Cup with a scrappy win against a hard working Whickham side. These teams are separated by 3 divisions and initially the gap between the two sides was apparent with the Whickham goal being peppered by Heighington attacks. The lively Lennon McCabe opening the scoring with an excellent individual goal. A second soon followed when Nic Connor finished superbly from the edge of the box. The watching parents probably expected an avalanche of goals to follow but the plucky Whickham side continued to look a threat on the break.
Half time: Heighington 2-0 Whickham Fellside.
Despite a stern talking to at half time, from coaches Mike Brain and Jamie McCabe, Heighington continued with their sluggish play and Whickham took advantage of some sloppy Heighington play and got a deserved goal. This was soon cancelled out when leading goalscorer Ted Brain produced another fine finish to add to his seasons tally. With 10 minutes remaining Whickham again pressed the Heighington defence and scored a second. The game was finally settled with an outstanding individual goal from man of the match Nic Connor, who picked the ball up in his own half before racing past the defence and calmly slotting home.
Final score: Heighington 4-2 Whickham Fellside.
MOTM: Nic Connor, Nic and his midfield partner Jude Bartley both maintained their high standards on a difficult pitch which did not allow for fast flowing football. Nic, however, slightly edged Jude to the award this week with 2 outstanding finishes. Next week Heighington return to League action with a home fixture against Escomb.
