Consett Blackfyne 1
v Newton Aycliffe YFC Seniors 3 (County Cup)
Away day in the county cup for the seniors, to play a team from the NE Combination League. Aycliffe started the game on fire and, within 4 minutes, took the lead when Niall Douglas found Jack Mortimer who fired home. The lead was doubled when Richard Murray volleyed home from a Josh Bayne corner. The lads had several chances to increase the lead even further, but the home keeper was in great form. Then, when Consett threatened, the back defensive 4 and keeper held strong. HT 0-2. The very hot weather was always going to play a part in the game, however, within 15 minutes of the start of the second half, the full squad was being used but Aycliffe continued to dominate the game, but just couldn’t convert the numerous chances. Mid way through the half, Consett were awarded a soft, but fair, penalty which they scored. However, straight from the kick off Reed Molloy looked like increasing the lead as he slotted passed the keeper, only to see their defender handle the ball on the line, a red card and penalty. Reed stepped up, slotted to secure a well-deserved win. MOM: Reed Molloy. Great result for the Senior team, now 4 wins from 4 in league and cup.
Newton Aycliffe Women 3 v Durham United 0
Over 70 supporters turned out to support the women against a tough Durham side. The game was end to end before Lottie headed home from a corner to take the lead. Aycliffe were now starting to dominate but a resilient Durham back line kept them out. Then a second corner of the game, the centre backs were up again, a volley from Alex lands at Sophie’s feet, she strikes the ball into the floor and the ball loops over the keeper, HT 2-0.
Second half was more of the same, but Aycliffe couldn’t find the right pass to break down the Durham defence. Then a throw, wide right, found Morgan on the edge of the box, shaping like she was going to shoot, she fooled the defender and laid the ball off to Katie who dinked the ball over the keeper to make it 3-0. We made some changes and asked the team to keep the ball and slow the game down and that’s exactly what they did, the defence were now more involved playing the ball around at the back, the final whistle went on a text-book performance, a proper team victory. POTM: Amelia. Thanks to McDonalds, Team Sponsor, and all the others who support the team.
