ROC Solid supported housing project has £2,000 more to spend on vulnerable young people – thanks to the High Sheriff Youth Awards.

“We were over the moon to be recognised in this way,” said deputy manager Steve Cook who attended the Wynyard Hall event with two ROC Solid clients Stephanie and Jamie.

Last year the charity, based in Burnhope, Newton Aycliffe, accommodated 50 new clients, some of whom had children and/or parents. This latest award comes in the wake of Nepacs awards for two of the charity’s managers in recognition of the excellent work they do with people on probation and ex prisoners and their families.

The youth awards are supported by County Durham Community Foundation, Sir James Knott Trust, Durham Constabulary, Office of the Durham Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner and Brewin Dolphin. It was attended by a host of regional and local civic dignitaries

Twelve organisations shared £13,000. ROC Solid will use its award for confidence-building activities. Many of its clients have been in the care system – all have vulnerabilities and were homeless, or a risk of homelessness.

Michelle Cooper, Chief Executive of County Durham Community Foundation, said: “We are so lucky to have so many brilliant organisations supporting young people, helping to keep our communities safe and giving them an opportunity to demonstrate the confidence these awards give them has been fantastic.”
